LAWMAKERS PROPOSE 182 RESERVED SEATS TO BOOST WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION

The Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Kafilat Ogbara, has called on Nigerians to support a bill proposing 182 additional legislative seats exclusively for women.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Ogbara, who represents Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos State highlighted the persistent underrepresentation of women in elected positions despite their large demographic presence. She argued that this imbalance limits representative governance.

The proposed bill aims to allocate one reserved seat for women in each state and the Federal Capital Territory across both chambers of the National Assembly, a move Ogbara described as a bold step toward fairer democracy.
