STRIKING NURSES SUSPEND INDUSTRIAL ACTION

The nationwide warning strike by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives has been suspended, as announced by the Minister of Health, Ali Pate.

According to Pate, the suspension followed agreements that were reached between the government and the association’s leadership.

No official statement was given by union leaders after the meeting.

The strike, which was launched on July 29, had been called over unmet demands related to improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions in federal health institutions.

RWANDA, CONGO HOLD FIRST JOINT COMMITTEE MEETING UNDER PEACE DEAL

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo held the first meeting of a joint oversight committee, marking a step toward implementing the peace deal signed last month in Washington.

The committee, created to oversee implementation and resolve disputes under the agreement, met in Washington with participation from the African Union, Qatar, and the United States.

The June agreement, brokered with support from the U.S. under former President Donald Trump’s administration, aims to end ongoing violence in eastern Congo that has claimed thousands of lives. The region is rich in minerals such as tantalum, cobalt, gold, copper, and lithium, attracting significant international interest.

Under the terms of the deal, both countries committed to enforcing a 2024 agreement requiring Rwandan troops to withdraw from eastern Congo within 90 days. However, several key commitments under the accord remain unfulfilled.

Nigeria D’Tigress advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket with an 83-47 victory over Cameroon in Abidjan.

The six-time defending champions will face Senegal next.

Cameroon started strong with a 4-0 lead, but Nigeria quickly took control, leading 36-18 at halftime. Amy Okonkwo was outstanding, scoring 15 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in the first half. Off the bench, Victoria Macaulay added energy and dominated the paint, helping Nigeria secure the win.

MARKETERS WARN AS DANGOTE PLANS DIRECT FUEL SALES

The Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) has raised concerns over the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s plan to supply refined petroleum products directly to end-users, bypassing established distribution channels. The association warned that such a move could cause widespread disruption, long-term product shortages, and the collapse of existing supply networks across the country.

Speaking at the association’s Annual General Meeting, NOGASA National President, Bennett Korie, urged the refinery to suspend its direct distribution plans and engage in further dialogue with industry stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of learning from the failures of previously mismanaged refineries under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

NOGASA also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to step in, arguing that Dangote Refinery alone lacks the capacity to manage nationwide distribution sustainably.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DIRECTS FMBN AND GOVERNORS TO COLLABORATE ON HOUSING

The Federal Government has directed the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to collaborate closely with state governors to develop viable and bankable housing projects focused on providing homeownership opportunities directly to citizens.

This directive was announced by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria Day at the 19th Africa International Housing Show held in Abuja. The Minister was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Mr. Mark Chieshe.

According to Dangiwa, the partnership aims to bridge the gap between federal housing policies and their execution at the state level, ensuring housing solutions reach the people more effectively.

This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s earlier launch of the Renewed Hope State-by-State Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign, which aims to make affordable homeownership a reality nationwide.

TOTTENHAM DEFEAT ARSENAL 1–0 IN PRE-SEASON NORTH LONDON FRIENDLY

The breakthrough came just before half-time, as Pape Matar Sarr scored in the 45th minute to put Spurs ahead.

That goal proved decisive in a match that saw limited clear-cut opportunities, with both teams locked in a tactical battle. Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a yellow card in the 36th minute, while Arsenal’s Mikel Merino and Spurs’ Brennan Johnson were also booked during stoppage time.

The fixture served as a valuable test of fitness and tactics for both squads ahead of the new season.

In the end, however, it was Tottenham who claimed the bragging rights in this North London clash.

DINO MELAYE RESIGNS FROM PDP, CITES PARTY’S FAILURE TO RESCUE NIGERIA

Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his decision to the party’s inability to deliver Nigeria from what he described as prevailing political cankerworms.

His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated July 30, addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Melaye’s exit comes amid the formation of a new opposition coalition, making him the latest prominent figure to part ways with the party.

TINUBU APPROVES ADENIYI’S TENURE EXTENSION AS CUSTOMS COMPTROLLER-GENERAL

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi.

Originally set to retire on August 31st, 2025, Adeniyi will now remain in office until August 2026.

In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension is aimed at allowing Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and see through key initiatives aligned with the administration’s agenda.

These reforms include the modernization of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the fulfillment of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

796 BILLION NAIRA ANNUAL REVENUE TARGETED FROM 5% PETROL SURCHARGE BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

The Nigerian government expects to collect about N796 billion annually through a five percent surcharge on both domestically produced and imported premium motor spirit.

This surcharge on refined petroleum products is part of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, one of four tax reform bills signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025.

The policy has drawn criticism from consumers, who highlight that the government recently removed fuel subsidies and is now introducing an additional five percent surcharge on fuel, without adequately addressing the tough economic realities faced by many Nigerians.

The surcharge targets fossil fuel products supplied or produced within Nigeria, including diesel, kerosene, aviation fuel, and compressed natural gas. However, it excludes renewable energy sources, household kerosene, cooking gas, and compressed natural gas intended for domestic use.

The D’Tigress are looking to make history by becoming the first team to win a fifth consecutive women’s Afro Basket title.
