INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Steps Down as Tenure Ends; Agbamuche-Mbu Takes Over in Acting Capacity

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially stepped down from his position, marking the conclusion of his tenure at the head of Nigeria’s electoral body.
Professor Yakubu announced his departure during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners held in Abuja.
In an emotional farewell, the outgoing Chairman expressed his gratitude to INEC staff and the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for their support, dedication, and service throughout his leadership.

Following his departure, May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal practitioner and current National Commissioner for INEC, has assumed the responsibilities of the Commission in an acting capacity. She also chairs INEC’s Legal Services, Clearance, and Complaints Committee
