Surprise M23 Offensive Forces Retreat of Congolese Forces and Wazalendo in Mineral-Rich Region

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the M23 rebel group has recaptured the town of Shoa in North Kivu province, just a day after it briefly fell under control of the Congolese army and pro-government Wazalendo militia, according to reports.

Residents stated that the rebels launched a surprise offensive early Sunday, forcing the Wazalendo to retreat from the gold, cobalt, and tantalum-rich region.

Meanwhile, the Congolese government, the United Nations, and Western nations have accused Rwanda of backing Mtwenty-three, a claim Kigali strongly denies. However, Congolese army officials have slammed the rebel attacks as a blatant violation of both the Washington and Doha peace agreements, underscoring the fragile state of security in the region.

Southwest Fulani Leaders Condemn Violence, Urge Arrest of Criminal Elements.

In a decisive move to address the ongoing clashes between herders and farmers in the Southwest region conflicts that have resulted in significant loss of life and property, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, with the support of the Council of Fulani Chiefs of Southwest Nigeria, has taken bold steps to tackle these issues head-on.

During a meeting in Lagos, members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association voiced their concerns over the growing criminal activities, including banditry, kidnappings, and farmland destruction, which have been linked to these conflicts.

Mohammed Abubakar, the Sarki Fulani of Lagos and Chairman of the Southwest Fulani Council of Chiefs, condemned the farmer-herder conflicts associated with the Fulani community.  The Group called on security agencies to identify and apprehend the criminal elements and their accomplices within the host communities.The association urged for peaceful coexistence between the Fulani and the host communities.

Dangote Refutes Claims of Refinery Repairs, Calls Report False

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied a report that it could shut its petrol unit for two to three months, according to the spokesman of the Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, who described the report as fake.

It had been earlier reported that the petrol unit at the six hundred and fifty thousand barrel-per-day Dangote refinery may be shut for two to three months for repairs, quoting industry monitor reports. However, Chiejina debunked the claims, describing them as fake news. In another development, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas  Workers’ President, Williams Akporeha,  declared that it would still embark on strike despite the intervention of the Federal Government to address the grievances of the union, a development that could lead to fuel scarcity.

ICER Director Highlights Promise of Universal Lassa Vaccine Ahead of Scientific Symposium.

The Executive Director of the International Centre of Excellence, Prof. Alash’le Abimiku, has said that similarities among different Lassa virus strains offer hope for a single vaccine to protect against the disease across West Africa.

Abimiku made this known to newsmen in Abuja, ahead of the institute’s 3rd Annual Scientific Symposium to hold on Monday and Tuesday. She harped on the institute’s focus areas in tackling infectious diseases prevalent in the region, said the centre had conducted a study on both the virus and the rodents that transmit Lassa fever to better understand how strains vary across states and countries.

Shettima Condoles Bama Victims, Vows Justice for Boko Haram Attack.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, in response to the tragic attack by Boko Haram insurgents in the Darajamal community, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, has offered deep condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the Federal Government is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Shettima expressed confidence in the armed forces’ capacity to overcome the security challenges facing the state, citing President Tinubu’s approval for the acquisition of additional drones and his directive for all security agencies to intensify and review their operational strategies.

The Vice President highlighted the federal government’s consideration of establishing state police and emphasised Tinubu’s position that security challenges in some Nigerian states require specialised units that understand local terrain, culture, and can effectively network at the grassroots level.

Military Storms Terrorist Hideouts in Borno, Recovers AK-47 and Ammunition.

Army Troops at the weekend swooped on terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements across the country, killing many and seizing arms and ammunition.

Army spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, gave accounts of how the criminals were neutralised in the Northwest, Northeast and Northcentral, with claims to have rescued many kidnapped victims, recovered assorted firearms, and seized illicit substances.

 According to her, in the Northeast, troops of one hundred and seventeen Task Force Battalion supported by Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilantes, engaged terrorists at Yimurmuze in Chibok Local Government of Borno State, neutralising one, and seized an AK-47 rifle, magazine, and 24 rounds of ammunition.

Oyo Summons 106 Property Owners for Compensation Verification

The Oyo State Government has summoned one hundred and six property owners affected by the first segment of the Ibadan Circular Road project to appear for compensation verification.

The announcement came during the fourth compensation disbursement at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Akin-Funmilayo Williams, said that out of two hundred and ninety-eight households enumerated, one hundred and ninety-two have completed verification, while one hundred and six are yet to comply, assuring that the government remains committed to transparency and accountability in the process.

So far, the state has paid over seven hundred million naira in compensation to affected property owners across four phases of the project.

Oyo State Seeks Investors for Development of Five Key Tourism Sites

The Oyo State Government has called on local and international investors to express interest in the development and management of five priority tourism sites across the state under Public-Private Partnership arrangements.

The state, through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency, announced the investment drive in a statement. The five focus sites listed for concession are Eleyele Lake, Ibadan Cultural Centre, Bower’s Tower, Iyake Lake in Ado-Awaye, and Idere Hills.

The statement said that the Government seeks credible partners to finance, design, build, operate, and maintain these sites in line with the State’s Tourism Reset Agenda, ensuring sustainability, community inclusion, and strong return on investment.

INEC, NIMC Join Forces to Integrate Biometric Data for Elections and ID

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has partnered with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to harmonise identity and voter registration processes across Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a statement on the NIMC X handle.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke when the NIMC Director-General, Abisola Kukar, and her delegation visited the INEC headquarters in Abuja, hailed the ongoing cooperation between the two federal agencies.

Yakubu stated that the collaboration would transform the country’s electoral system, as both agencies collectively hold the largest biometric databases in Nigeria: INEC for electoral purposes and NIMC for general citizenship identification.

Healthcare Access requires Coordinated Financing, says Finance Minister Edun

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has stated that health care requires a coordinated system and allocation of financial resources to ensure that the masses gain equitable access to healthcare, stressing that with Nigeria’s population, an investment is required in medical services.

Edun, who stated this in a National Health Financing Dialogue in Abuja, said that the dialogue is urgently and critically required and in alignment with the reform agenda of President Bola Tinubu and his pursuit of inclusive growth.

He, however, affirmed that there is an improvement at the primary health care level, adding that health care is much more accessible when it is pre-planned and pre-paid for.
