PenCom Launches ‘Pension Revolution 2.0’ to Boost Retiree Pay and Expand Coverage

The National Pension Commission PenCom, has announced a fresh programme called Revolution two point Zero, to increase retirees’ and pensioners’ pay and expand pension services to all Nigerians, including the informal sector.

This was disclosed in a statement by PenCom Director General, Omolola Oloworaran, who outlined that the programme is aimed at enabling dignity for retirees through health insurance and optimizing investment performance in order to deliver sustainable long-term returns.

She stated that Pension Revolution 2.0 is the most significant advancement since two thousand and four, describing it as bold and evolutionary in practice.

Speaker Abbas Defends Tinubu’s Borrowing Policy as Tool for Growth and Infrastructure

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, has clarified that the National Assembly is not opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing policy, insisting that lawmakers support borrowing as a legitimate tool for funding infrastructure and driving sustainable growth.

Abbas gave the assurance in Abuja at the 8th Annual African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices Conference, where he stressed that borrowing, when carefully applied, remains a globally recognized fiscal instrument. He explained that the President had assured parliament that new loans would remain within the country’s medium-term debt framework and international best practices.

Court Adjourns Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Cybercrime Trial to October 20

The planned commencement of the trial in the cybercrime charges brought against suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, before the Federal High Court in Abuja, was stalled following an objection raised by her counsel, Ehiogie West-Idahosa, SAN.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was arraigned on June 30th and granted bail on self-recognition, is alleged to have transmitted false and injurious information via electronic means with the intention of maligning, inciting, endangering lives, and breaching public order.

The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Umar, stated that he intended first to determine the preliminary objection raised by the defense before taking any further steps in the matter. He consequently adjourned the case to October 20th for the hearing of the objection and commencement of the trial.

NDLEA Boss Marwa Urges Parents to Use Drug Test Kits at Home

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, has urged parents to acquire drug test kits for home use, to ensure early detection of drug use by children and manage the situation.

Marwa said drug abuse has become a societal menace that endangers the health, well-being, and future of young people, noting that parents, guardians, and teachers have a sacred responsibility to their children along the right path, helping them to nurture their talents, pursue their dreams, and avoid the destructive grip of drugs.

Marwa encouraged families to take proactive steps, including acquiring drug test kits for home use. It is better to detect drug use early, when intervention is possible, than to wait until it develops into full-blown addiction.

Reps Open Talks on Electoral, Judicial Reforms in Ongoing Constitution Review

The House of Representatives has opened a national public hearing on amendments to the 1999 Constitution, with key issues including state policing, special legislative seats for women, and electoral and judicial reforms.
Presiding over the session, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the Special Committee on Constitution Review, said the constitution must remain a living document that strengthens institutions, deepens federalism, and promotes justice and accountability.

The hearing, which follows zonal consultations across the six geopolitical zones, is expected to consolidate citizens’ views and shape the next stage of the amendment process

Nepal Sets Up Probe Panel After Deadly Anti-Corruption Protests Kill 74

Nepal’s interim government, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, has set up a panel to investigate the violence during anti-corruption protests this month that killed seventy-four people and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to quit, according to a Nepal minister.

Rameshwore Khanal, who Karki put in charge of the finance ministry, said the three-member panel headed by retired judge Gauri Bahadur Karki had been given three months to complete the probe.

In a social media post, former Prime Minister Oli also demanded an investigation into the violence and said his government did not order police to fire at the protesters.

Ebola Outbreak in Southern Congo Claims 31 Lives, WHO Confirms

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that thirty-one out of thirty-eight confirmed Ebola cases have resulted in deaths in southern Congo, where authorities are battling a new outbreak of the deadly virus.

The latest figures show the casualty rate has nearly doubled since last week and that the disease is spreading rapidly, as more than nine hundred contacts have been identified so far.

An official at WHO Africa’s program, Doctor Patrick Otim, said that more than five hundred health care workers and contacts have received their vaccination, offering them crucial protection.
